Biniam Afwerki

Biniam Afwerki is an interdisciplinary artist from Asmara, Eritrea, working primarily in painting, printmaking, and bookmaking. His work explores storytelling, cultural histories, and abstract representations of the human figure. Drawing profound inspiration from poetic expression, he employs bold colors and layered compositions to reimagine cultural narratives and artifacts. His deliberate and intricate techniques reflect both his inexhaustible artistic energy and his passion for symbolism and metaphor.


Beyond his dedicated studio practice, Afwerki teaches art in Asmara, is an active member of the Eri Art Collective, and a passionate collaborator in the city’s art scene. His work has been exhibited internationally, including in Asmara Eritrea, Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Port Louis (Mauritius), Romania, the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States and more. Through his prolific body of work, Afwerki brings new perspectives to printmaking and improvisational creativity to bookmaking, playing a significant role in contributing to contemporary Eritrean art.
